May 14, 2006 | Mum's the Word

Just now, while I was typing this, I thought of a really good Mother's Day Gift. A frog. Actually, a lucky frog. I've read that frogs are sometimes given as gifts to someone embarking on a journey. It would have been perfect, because my mom is leaving for Peru on Wednesday.

On one hand, I'm really excited for her. On the other hand, I'm going to be really pissed off if something happens to her. I kind of get to be mad anyways because she's going to be gone for my birthday. But as long as she comes back in one piece, I think I can overlook that.

Here's wishing all the Mom's out there a Happy Mother's Day.

My husband went to Peru 6 years ago and loved it. Other than saving some other guys life as he clung to the edge of a cliff, there were no life-threatening experiences of his own. I'm sure your Mom will be fine.

:^)

The word for frog in Japanese is "kaeru" which is a homonym for "return" or "come back" (home). That's why little frog charms are given to travelers: they carry a wish for a safe return home. Hope your mom has a great trip and a safe return.
