June 09, 2008 | No, You Cannot Borrow My Pen

Boston Public Library

This past weekend was the first weekend in a long time where I have had absolutely no plans what so ever. What's a girl to do? Watch the food network, natch. Also, I had a cold, so I sort of had an excuse to live on the sofa for a couple of days. I watched Paula Deen fry EVERYTHING, Bobby Flay lost two "throw downs" (I thought I would hate that show, but I kind of like it because he's lost on every episode I've watched), and I re-kindled my schoolgirl crush on Alton Brown. Sigh.

The cold set me back on my blog reading (again), but while I was attempting to catch up today, I remembered that I wanted to mention the Pen Addict blog. I'm absolutely loving all the pen reviews, because I'm a bit of a pen addict myself. When I find a brand/style I like, I am fiercely protective of them. So if I ever don't let you borrow a pen, it's not because I don't like you, but because I love my pens (perhaps a little too much). My current favorite? The Uni-ball Vision Elite Micro in blue black.

Totally unrelated to anything: I am becoming increasingly tempted to dye my hair a dark shade of something. Black might be too harsh (though I would love to at least try it), so maybe a darker red or brownish color? My hair is short, if I hate it, it'll grow out fast, right?

Comments

I have a favorite pen at work and am really anal about it. It's the only one of it's kind and no one is allowed to borrow it!

Carolina, that is a FABULOUS idea. I may go that route...

Hullo,

Thought I would drop this idea by you... When I wanted to dye my hair black (I have brown hair) I used a temporary dye first that would wash out easily incase I ended up not liking it. Then when I did like it I went ahead and did the full on deed.

Hi! :D I am also a fanatic about pens! I remember back when I was in high school and had my first job, I'd go down to staples and spend big chunks of money on pens and led pencils. LOL. I think I'm finding my way back to that addiction, because I did lay low for a while there. hehe. :D

Ohhhh, thanks for the tip on the website! I'm such a pen addict too! I wrote a speech about it when I was in high school and at work I have a set of pens that I don't like in a cup for when people come in to "borrow" a pen and walk away with it. The good pens are hidden in my drawer! ;-)

You current favorite pen is one of my favorites too, next to the unknown super-fine tip pens I bought at a Japanese imports store.

As you can see, I can go on and on about this topic.

Girl, I'm a pen addict, too!! High 5! My favorites are the Hi-Tec pens by Pilot. The .3s and .4s are the best. If you're ever around Japantown, stop by the stationery store across from the Kinokuniya Bookstore -- I swear you'll go pen craaaaaaaazy -- at least I do =). They have pens AND mechanical pencils AND erasers, not to mention cute notebooks and pretty paper.

Oh, sister.

I love the Uniball Signo 207 Micro in black. I wrote an entire post about my anal retentive pen thing when I went back to school - I packed extra, cheap pens for those that wanted to borrow. Seriously.

We share the love of the Uni-Ball Vision Elite. I like to buy extras and stock them, still in packaging, in my drawers. You know, for winter.

Oh the food network. Seriously. I have a problem. The fact that you mentioned three of my favourite shows - means we are going to be INTERNET BFF's 4-EVER.

It's funny, I feel the same as you do about Throwdown. I am actually not fond of Mr. Flay, I think he's a bit of an arrogant douche, but I LOVE the fact he loses on that show. It drives me NUTS on Iron Chef America that he is not only the most often dueled chef, but he almost ALWAYS wins.

Ok, I need to stop. Or this is going to turn into a huge Food Network rant and I will end up taking over your entire comment board. But oh, Alton. Paula Deen. Ina. Yum. But not Yummo. BooHissBoo to you Rachael Ray, or BHB or something equally stupid she'd say.

My sentiments exactly on the hair dying (dyeing?). I have short hair, too, so I never have to live with a bad color for too long. Some words of caution: dark dye will dye your scalp, and on short hair it is MUCH more noticeable. Color on a weekend, and be prepared for a few shampoos -- other than that, I've always had great results with darker shades with my fair skin.

I tend to get that way about pens myself. You could actually trace my life from the Uni-Ball Micro 0.2mm (1985-1987) to the Pilot Precise V5 (1987-early 90s?) to the Pilot V•Ball Extra Fine (early 90s-early 2000s) and my lostness thereafter. I didn't actually settle on a new pen of record until about a year ago, when I glommed onto the Pilot G2 retractable in 0.38mm. (We need to get down to tenths of a millimeter? We can get down to tenths of a millimeter?)

Major personal idiosyncracy: ever since 7th grade (oh, twenty-plus years or so), I carry my pen in my right hip pocket, vertically next to the wallet. Everybody did back then. Somehow, I just never quit.

I also heart Alton Brown. What is it about that crazy hair and those adorable glasses?

Auburn is awfully nice.

I happen to be sporting a skunk
stripe.
