March 30, 2006 | A Break-Up Letter

Dearest Rain,

There was a time when I thought I wanted you around all the time. Your moody gray skies were a welcome break from that obnoxiously bright Sun. You gave me reason to wear a cute wool hat, or carry a jaunty umbrella. In fact, there was a time when I seriously considered moving somewhere where I'd get to see more of you. Which is part of the reason it's so hard for me to say this...

I think we need to spend some time apart.

It's not that I don't like having you around, but 23 consecutive days is a little much. I'm not saying that you should never come back, or anything drastic like that. It's just that I need to spend some time with the Sun. Everyone knows that you two don't get along. You can't stand to be in the same place at the same time. And since I'm at a point where I feel like I really need to work on my relationship with the Sun (I think I've figured out a way to cope with his bright personality), you're going to have to find a new haunt for a while. I'm sorry, I know this must be terribly shocking for you, but I really need to do this.

And you never know. After spending a good chunk of time with the Sun, I just might be begging you to come back. But we're not going to be able to find that out unless you GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE, right?

I knew you'd understand. You're so cool like that, Rain.

See you in a few months,
whitney

Comments

We actually haven't had much rain, save for today and I think that I kind of miss it.

When I saw this forecast come up yesterday, a little piece of me died inside.

Thanks for commenting everyone!

Milk and Cake, if I could set up a weather exchange program, I would do it in a second!

It's actually a little less rainy today. But the wind has picked up. The fact remains, it's still too cold to wear a skirt and sandals. This annoys me.

So are you going to spank the rain with a spatula? eh?

I agree. rain is el suckaroono.

A friend of mine imports her sunscreen from Canada where they sell the good shit that the US FDA won't let us have. Remind me and I'll send you the name...

There's a drought where I live, and the farmers could certainly use some of that rain. I worry that the farmer's market this year will not be as cool.

I heartily second milk and cake's sentiment! But yeah - as a former Seattleite, I do know the "enough, already" feeling well.

To quote, or more likely misquote, Amelia Earhart (one of my favorite women ever) - I don't want any one thing all of the time.

Oh my god, I'm in such total and utter agreement with you on this.

I normally *love* the rain... but GO AWAY ALREADY!!! I'm sick of wearing sweaters and a rain coat, it's time for short sleeves and back yard get togethers on warm spring nights.

I wish I would have thought of that break up letter...my sentiments exactly!

Those are the most beautiful spatulas I have ever seen. Were I able to, I would purchase one in every color. I don't cook much, but who can resist a fabulous, pristine spatula.

why don't you send some my way? i haven't seen any in ages, and lately i've been writing the same letter to the sun. maybe a weather exchange program?
